Sharpsburg

Sharpsburg, founded in 1763, is situated in Washington County, Maryland, near Antietam Creek and the Potomac River. At the time of the Battle of Antietam, roughly 2,400 citizens called Sharpsburg home. Author Stephen Sears described the area as “a quiet place, an entirely ordinary little rural community where the roads came together.” In September 1862, this peaceful ambiance shattered when the Union and Confederate armies – nearly 120,000 armed forces – clashed at Sharpsburg, culminating in the deadliest day in American military history.
